THE MEADOW

The meadow at Oakhill Nature Reserve is an open, grassy area that contrasts with the surrounding woodland and ponds. It is made up of a mix of wild grasses and seasonal wildflowers, creating a natural, slightly untamed landscape that changes throughout the year.

A former arable field at the heart of the reserve which is cut an cleared annually. Look out for Oxeye Daisies, Vetches, Yellow Rattle and other flowering plants during Spring and Summer.

In spring and summer, the meadow becomes especially colourful and lively, attracting insects and providing an important habitat for wildlife. It offers a wide, open space with a peaceful feel, where visitors can enjoy views across the reserve while experiencing one of its most vibrant and dynamic habitats.

WHAT YOU'LL NOTICE

The meadow is one of the most active areas for wildlife, especially in the warmer months, thanks to its flower-rich habitat.

You’ll notice lots of movement here. Butterflies and bees feeding on wildflowers. Grasshoppers and crickets hopping through the long grass and dragonflies passing through from the nearby ponds and wetlands. One sunny days the meadow feels full of life.

The open grasslands attract different birds to the woodlands. Finches and sparrows feeding on seeds whilst swallows and house martins fly overhead catching insects. Occasionally you might also spot birds of prey hunting above the meadow.

Small mammals hidden in the grass, voles and mice moving through narrow runs. These attract predators like owls and foxes at dusk.

Seasonal blooms change the look of the meadow as the reserve moves through the year. Wildflowers and grasses provide a vital source of food for the wildlife at Oakhill Nature Reserve. It’s the most colourful and lively part of the reserve, especially in Spring and Summer.
